Cotinine (Nicotine)
Cotinine (Nicotine Metabolite) Test Device
Nicotine is the number 1 abused drug and avoidable cause of death in the United States. Not to mention, routine exposure to second hand smoke is considered to be a dangerous health risk. So for these reasons alone, health and insurance companies test routinely for tobacco usage.
The Cotinine Test Device is a rapid screening test designed to detect Cotinine, the major metabolite of Nicotine, in human urine at a level of 200 ng/mL. This test utilizes a monoclonal antibody to selectively detect elevated levels of Cotinine in urine. The window of detection for Cotinine in urine at a cutoff level of 200 ng/mL is ~ 2 hours-10 days after smoking. The window of detection depends on duration, amount, frequency of tobacco use, as well as other factors. The accuracy rate of this test is 99%.
The Cotinine Test Device provides only a qualitative, preliminary analytical result so it is recommended that a secondary analytical method (i.e. GC/MS) be used to obtain a confirmed result. This test is NOT available for sale in Europe.
Cotinine Levels And What They Mean:
- <10 ng/mL – Non-active smoker.
- 10 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL – Light smoker or moderate passive exposure.
- >300 ng/mL – Considered to be heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes/day).
