Fecal Occult Blood Tests FAQs
Are there any dietary restrictions associated with the test? There are no restrictions in terms of foods to avoid when a fecal sample is taken. Alcohol and certain medications such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), indomethacin, reserpine, phenylbutazone and corticosteroids may cause gastrointestinal irritation and subsequent bleeding that may be detected by this test. Consult your doctor about whether it is necessary or possible to stop taking such medications temporarily so as to increase the accuracy of the FOB test when the fecal sample is collected. What are the recommended storage conditions? The kit, including the test strips or cassettes and the collection tubes, can be stored at room temperature (15°-30°C or 59°-86°F) until the printed expiration date. While not necessary, the kit and/or its components can be refrigerated. How long can the fecal sample be stored before testing? The collected sample can be stored for at least eight days at temperatures below 35°C (95°F), six months at 2°-8°C (36°-46°F) and two years at -20°C (-4°F). How do the FOB and FOB II Test kits differ? The FOB and FOB II Test kits include sample collection tubes of different styles. However, the test devices in the FOB and FOB II test kits are the same. Can other types of samples be used with the test? No, the FOB test is intended to be used with fecal specimens only. How is the test interpreted? A 'negative' result occurs when only the C-line appears; this means there is no hemoglobin present in the fecal sample or it is present below detectable levels. A 'positive' result occurs when both the C- and T-lines appear; this means the hemoglobin level in the fecal sample is above the level of detection and occult blood may be present. A doctor should carry out the appropriate follow-up tests to determine the cause of the bleeding. What if no C-line appears? If no C-line appears, the test is invalid. An invalid result should be repeated with an unused device; the same fecal sample can be used for retesting within the recommended storage period. Should an external quality control be used? The device has a built-in control feature in the C-line that will show whether the sample has migrated correctly. A human hemoglobin control may be used if laboratory and/or regulatory guidelines specify the need for an external control. What is the analytical sensitivity of the test? The cut-off level of the test is 50μg human hemoglobin per gram of feces or 50ng human hemoglobin per milliliter of buffer. How does this test differ from a guaiac-based test? The Instant-View® FOB Test is an immunoassay that detects the human hemoglobin present in occult (hidden) blood using antibodies specific to the human hemoglobin molecule. A guaiac-based test detects peroxidase activity and is not specific for human hemoglobin. Therefore, certain foods can interfere with the results of a guaiac test and cause false positive results. The Instant-View® test is not affected by the amount or type of food that is eaten. What is the CPT code for this test? The CPT code is G0328. The current reimbursement amount is $18.56. Quality. Service. Commitment. |
