What is Buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine is a medication that is prescribed to treat people with opiate addiction. It contains small amounts of opiates to make withdrawal easier and less painful.

How long is buprenorphine detected in the body?

Buprenorphine can be detected in the urine for up to a week after being used. In chronic or long-term users, this can be even longer.

What is buprenorphine used for?

Buprenorphine is also known as suboxone, subutex and temgesic and is used as a medication for addiction management. It is similar to methadone, but is thought to be less addictive and easier to transition off of.

What is the difference between suboxone and buprenorphine?

Suboxone also contains naxolone, which reverses the opioid reaction, in order to deter people from abusing it. If used correctly, the naloxone isn’t active because it won’t be absorbed by the body. If someone were to crush and/or inject the medication, the naloxone is activated, which would put the user into withdrawal instantly. Abuse of buprenorphine isn’t common in the United States.

What are the forms of buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine is available in many different forms. There are liquids for injection, implantable pellets, buccal films, and sublingual tablets. Patches are available overseas, but have not been approved for use in the United States.

What are the effects of buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine contains enough opioid for the person to be relieved of their withdrawal symptoms, but not enough for the person to feel “high.” Some people use buprenorphine with other drugs, like alcohol or benzodiazepines, in an attempt to feel the effects of the opioid. This is dangerous because both drugs can slow respirations, which can be potentially fatal.

Lateral flow assays have provided a very useful tool for three decades.
